Starting a medical billing & coding career can feel out of reach.

It doesn’t have to be. Here’s what tends to get in the way — and how ICOHS College removes it.

“I don’t have a healthcare background.”

Both programs start from the fundamentals — medical terminology, anatomy, and how coding works. No experience required.

“I don’t want to work directly with patients.”

You won’t. Billing and coding is a behind-the-scenes role — many positions are fully remote and none require clinical patient care.

“I can’t put my life on hold to go back to school.”

Study fully online or hybrid, with flexible scheduling built around work and family responsibilities.

“What if AI makes this job disappear?”

AI is a tool, not a replacement. ICOHS College trains you to use AI-assisted coding platforms — so you become more valuable, not less.

Frequently asked questions

Which medical billing & coding program is right for me?

Choose the AI Medical Billing & Coding certificate (under 12 months) if you want the fastest path to national certification and an entry-level coding or billing role. Choose the Associate of Science degree (about 20 months) if you want a full college degree with added business, leadership and revenue-cycle coursework and a foundation to advance further. Both prepare you for the same core coding careers.

Can I start with the certificate and continue to the Associate degree later?

Many students use the certificate as a stepping stone — it covers the same hands-on coding core as the degree. If you think you may want the degree later, talk to an ICOHS College admissions advisor about how your completed coursework can apply toward the Associate of Science.

What’s the difference between the two programs?

The coding core is the same. The Associate of Science adds coursework in medical insurance and revenue-cycle management, business intelligence, leadership and communication, plus a capstone — and awards a college degree, which is why it takes about 20 months versus under 12 for the certificate.

Why does the program include AI training?

Healthcare is rapidly adopting AI-assisted coding and auditing tools. Rather than replacing coders, these tools automate repetitive work so coders can focus on complex cases. ICOHS College trains you to use them, so you enter the field as an AI-fluent coder — exactly what employers are looking for.

Do I need healthcare experience to enroll?

No. Both programs begin with medical terminology, anatomy and coding fundamentals and build up step by step. They’re designed for career changers, working parents and recent graduates with no prior healthcare background.

Is this a remote-friendly career? Do I work with patients?

Medical billing and coding is a behind-the-scenes role with no clinical patient care. Many positions are fully remote or hybrid, working for hospitals, physician practices, insurance companies, telehealth providers and medical coding services.

What certifications will I prepare for?

Depending on your track, you’ll prepare for nationally recognized credentials such as the CPC® (Certified Professional Coder, AAPC) and CCS® (Certified Coding Specialist, AHIMA), among others. Your admissions advisor will map the right certifications to your program and goals.

How much can medical billers and coders earn?

Pay varies by role, certification, location and experience. According to industry data, entry-level coders often start around $45,000–$65,000, certified coders with AI fluency around $70,000–$90,000+, and experienced auditors and specialists $90,000–$110,000+. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 9% growth for Medical Records Specialists from 2023–2033. Figures reflect the field generally and are not a guarantee of earnings.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, for those who qualify. ICOHS College is an accredited, Title IV-eligible nonprofit, so you may be eligible for federal financial aid (FAFSA), Cal Grant, a needs-based institutional scholarship, veteran and military benefits, and zero-to-low-interest payment plans.
